Thanks to the support from the Tesco Stronger Starts Golden Grant, we have transformed our early years outdoor space by creating a dedicated storytelling area. Our aim was to inspire a love of reading, spark imagination, and strengthen children's communication skills through engaging, outdoor experiences. With the funding, we purchased a storytelling bundle that includes a beautiful story chair, seating for the children, and a freestanding whiteboard for visual storytelling and mark-making. It is fabulous for bringing stories to life in different parts of our outdoor classroom. With the additional funding received as part of the golden grant we were able to install a square shade sail, which has made the area comfortable and usable in all weathers. This simple but significant addition ensures the storytelling zone can be enjoyed year-round, protecting children from both sunshine and light rain while they read, listen, and play. The new storytelling area is now used daily for outdoor story sessions, small-group reading and imaginative play. It provides a calm, inviting space that encourages children to listen, talk, and express ideas freely. Outdoor learning is an important part of our curriculum, and having a flexible, purpose-built storytelling zone has enriched this experience enormously. Before this project, our outdoor space lacked a suitable area for group story time. The new unit has filled that gap perfectly. Every child in our early years setting now has more opportunities to explore books and language in a natural, engaging environment that promotes confidence, imagination, and a lifelong love of reading.
