Growing Stronger Together in God's Love

Love

In every class, we promote a love of maths through creative and fun teaching. Children’s love for maths results from exciting learning and tasks where we encourage deep thinking, investigation and problem solving. Maths is a priority and is something we love and celebrate at All Saints’.

Compassion

In maths, we support each other in different ways and show compassion during maths lessons. We teach children to show compassion towards each other, especially when they make mistakes. Children are supported by their adults and peers; they are shown patience and kindness.

Koinonia

At All Saints’, we give children many opportunities to work together. We promote the sharing of ideas, which we believe deepens children’s learning and thinking. The collaboration between children also develops their language and ability to work with a range of different children, with differing strengths.

Endurance

Everyday, we challenge children and actively promote that mistakes are there to be learnt from. We promote the idea that learning makes us better mathematicians. We believe it is not just about knowing the answer; it is about the journey and hard work that got you there!

At All Saints’, we have developed a well-sequenced mathematics curriculum in order for our learners to build upon their prior knowledge. We follow the Teaching for Mastery Approach which allows children to develop a deep understanding of the new concepts being taught. Lessons are taught in small steps to ensure that children participate in learning that is sequential and builds upon prior learning. Our intent is to create an interactive and engaging learning environment where every child is given opportunities to explore and deepen knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts. We aim to teach children to become fluent in the fundamentals of maths; reason mathematically and solve problems by applying mathematics. By developing a love of maths, children are able to master a range of mathematical concepts through their reasoning and problem solving.

The maths curriculum is  designed to increase children’s sense of number and become fluent using the four operations to solve problems within a range of different concepts.  Lessons are taught in mixed ability classrooms where children develop the Christian Value of Koinonia by working together, learning from one another. We aim for our children to also show compassion in their maths lessons as they are encouraged to develop the skill of collaborating with others using peer support.

By the end of their All Saints’ journey, the children will become confident, proficient and curious learners. These attributes will allow them to develop into resilient mathematicians showing endurance when faced with a challenge. In addition, our maths curriculum improves the verbal and written communication skills of our pupils, by encouraging them to verbalise their explanations and reasoning using appropriate mathematical vocabulary, which is taught throughout the units of work. All of these skills are those that can be transferred into other curriculum areas and build upon previous knowledge and skills that have been taught in previous year groups.
