Year 2
There are three topics Year 2 will cover this year- click below to find out more.
My Community and Me!- Autumn Term
What is in our town?
Year 2 will have the opportunity to build on their map skills and consider what makes a town by exploring the geography of their local area. They will find out more about why we use maps and how to read them, as well as having the opportunity to draw their own maps and plan perspectives.
How has our area changed over time?
Local Study: Significant local people and changes in our area over time
As historians, Year 2 will learn about significant people and places in their own locality. They will focus on famous characters of our local area, Admiral Lord Nelson and William Morris. They will also look at how their local area has changed over time for example how Merton’s population grew due to transport improvements– going from a small farming community to a residential suburb within thirty years. They will look at how Industry expanded on the banks of the Wandle and look at early settlers in Morden– what have the archaeologists found?
Globetrotters- Spring Term
What is a desert?
Year 2 will compare sand and snow deserts- Antarctica vs the Sahara. Year 2 will make an outdoor weather station, noting down observations and data throughout the unit until the last lesson when the children will use the data to compare Arctic climate with the UK climate. In small groups, they will record wind direction, rainfall and temperature daily for the remainder of the school year.
How have explorers changed the world?
London's Burning- Summer Term
What makes a city?
Year 2 will go on a journey, studying maps and exploring features of London. They will learn about some human and physical features of cities and explore some of the different landmarks in London. There are also opportunities to compare cites and discover landmarks and coastlines your children probably never knew existed!
Why was the Fire of London ‘Great’?
Year 2 will go back to 1666 and the era of the Stuarts as they find out about the Great Fire of London and the effects it had on the people of the time. They will find out when, where, how and why the Great Fire happened and explore how we know about it through the diary of Samuel Pepys and other physical and written sources. In this unit, they will evaluate source material and make connections to discus the causes and consequences of this event that was significant both nationally and globally.
Key Information
PE
Y2 St Catherine - Tuesday and Thursday
Y2 St William - Tuesday and Thursday
Children will need to wear their full All Saints' PE Kit to school on these days. Please be mindful of the weather and choose the most appropriate PE kit (tracksuit bottoms in winter and shorts in summer). Stud earrings and plain watches, if worn, must be removed for all PE lessons and sports activities.
Children wear their house colour T-Shirt for all PE lessons. Round neck coloured t-shirts can be bought from the school uniform shop or can be sourced elsewhere. When purchasing your child’s t-shirt, they should be round necked, completely plain and as close as possible to the shade of colour shown on the school uniform page.
Water Bottles & Snacks
Children must bring a water bottle to school to ensure they keep hydrated throughout the day. Water bottles must be clearly labelled with your child’s name.
Children have the option of bringing a healthy snack to eat at playtime- such as a piece of fruit/vegetables, rice cakes, crackers or a small sandwich. We are a nut free school, so no nuts are allowed to be brought onto the school premises.
Pencil Cases
Children are not to bring their own pencil case into school from home - all equipment your child requires for their learning will be provided by the school.
Home Learning
This will be set on Google Classroom on a Friday and must be 'turned in' by the following Friday. Please click the tab on the right-hand side of this page to find out the expectations for Year 2 (including a Google Classroom Parent Guide).
Start and the End of the School day.
Our school day starts at 8.45am. This allows the children time to settle and complete their Early Work, ready for their first lesson at 9am. Please ensure that your child arrives at school on time.
At the end of the day, Year 2 will leave via their classrooms at 3:30. Children will remain with the teacher until the appropriate adult comes to collect them.
If a different adult is collecting your child please inform the school by e-mailing parentenquiries@allsaints.merton.co.uk.
