Year 5

There are four topics Year 5 will cover this year- click below to find out more.

Vikings vs Anglo-Saxons- Autumn 1

What effect did the Vikings have on Britain?

Year 5 will go on a fascinating journey back in time as they find out about the Viking and Anglo-Saxon struggle for the kingdom of England and how England became a unified country. They will explore where the Vikings came from, how they fought for territory and power, and how their fighting ultimately led to the kingdom of England we know today. Along the way, they will build a deeper picture of what life was like for everyday people living in Anglo-Saxon and Viking Britain, exploring Viking runes and Anglo-Saxon stories like Beowulf.

River Deep- Autumn 2

Investigating Rivers

Year 5 will explore the rivers of the UK, mapping their features and finding out how they are managed. They will investigate land use around the river Thames and how humans interact with rivers, sadly, often causing pollution.  They will find out how they can take positive action to help protect our precious life-giving waters

Earth and Beyond- Spring Term

Extreme Earth

Year 5 will explore the Earth's greatest natural disasters and find out all about the Earth's extremes, from raging tropical storms to violent erupting volcanoes to terrifying towering tsunamis. They will explore how these extremes affect people, communities and landscapes. Thames flood defences.

World War I, II & Windrush- Summer Term

World War I, II & Migration

Throughout these lessons, Year 5 will find out where and when the Second World War took place, what life was like for children in WW2 and how Britain defended herself from attack. They will also learn about the Holocaust and the devastating effects of the war on people around the world. Year 5 will also find out about the reasons for, and effects of, migration from Caribbean countries after the Second World War.

Key Information

PE

St. Isabelle's PE days are Thursday and Friday.

Children will need to wear their full All Saints' PE Kit to school on these days. Please be mindful of the weather and choose the most appropriate PE kit (tracksuit bottoms in winter and shorts in summer).  Stud earrings and plain watches, if worn, must be removed for all PE lessons and sports activities.

Children wear their house colour T-Shirt for all PE lessons. Round neck coloured t-shirts can be bought from the school uniform shop or can be sourced elsewhere.  When purchasing your child’s t-shirt, they should be round necked, completely plain and as close as possible to the shade of colour shown on the school uniform page.

Water Bottles & Snacks

Children must bring a water bottle to school to ensure they keep hydrated throughout the day. Water bottles must be clearly labelled with your child’s name.

Children have the option of bringing a healthy snack to eat at playtime- such as a piece of fruit/vegetables, rice cakes, crackers or a small sandwich. We are a nut free school, so no nuts are allowed to be brought onto the school premises.

Pencil Cases

Children are not to bring their own pencil case into school from home - all equipment your child requires for their learning will be provided by the school.

Home Learning

This will be set on Google Classroom on a Friday and must be 'turned in' by the following Friday. Please click the tab on the right-hand side of this page to find out the expectations for Year 5 (including a Google Classroom Parent Guide).

Start and the End of the School day

Our school day starts at 8.40am. This allows the children time to settle and complete their Early Work, ready for their first lesson at 9am. Please ensure that your child arrives at school on time.

At the end of the day, St. Theodore will leave via the door next to the Year 6 classroom, at the end of the playround, by the Timbertrail at 3:20. St. Isabelle will leave via their classroom at 3:20. Children will remain with the teacher until the appropriate adult comes to collect them.

If a different adult is collecting your child please inform the school by e-mailing parentenquiries@allsaints.merton.co.uk.
