Growing Stronger Together in God's Love

Love

Throughout the year, we promote the love of writing and reading through the texts we choose, the purpose given to the writing units and whole school events we lead. Supporting a child to be a writer and a reader gives them a voice, a skill needed throughout their life.

Compassion

In English, we support pupils’ to learn about different people through the texts we chose (people from different social, ethnic and cultural groups) and we teach the pupils’ to show compassion for the stories they hear, discussing the differences between people.

Koinonia

Collaborative learning is an important element when teaching English. Pupils’ work  together to articulate their thinking, share knowledge and skills and address misconceptions through peer support and discussion.

Justice

There are a number of English units where pupils are encouraged to write in order to  inspire action- locally, nationally and globally.

Through our English curriculum, our intent is to create a positive reading, writing and speaking and listening culture in school, so our pupils go from strength to strength, building on a range of skills, as they work through each journey of the writing process. Throughout this journey, we ensure the children of All Saints’ are immersed in a range of genres, writing for an array of purposes and audiences in order to unlock limitless opportunities for them.

We aim for all children at All Saints' Primary School to leave Year 6 with the ability to:

  • Embrace reading, demonstrating their love of reading and a desire to read for enjoyment
  • Write and read with confidence, fluency and understanding, using a range of independent strategies
  • Write in a variety of styles (text types) with intended impact using various writing skills/tools
  • Carefully select vocabulary with attention to the desired effect on the readers’ thoughts and feelings and articulate their responses in any discussion

We adapt learning in response to diverse learning needs and overcoming potential barriers making learning accessible for all no matter what the children’s starting point is, so they reach their potential and flourish. We want all of our children to be capable readers, writers, spellers and speakers, who can transfer their English skills to other curriculum areas and who are prepared for the next phases in their education. By giving children the context to learning, they will understand the value of English to them now and in their futures.
