English

Growing Stronger Together in God's Love

As in all of our subjects, as children work through the English unit in hand, they will be given opportunities to explore and be immersed in the learning, be explicitly taught skills and learn to apply, and critique, them through our All Saints' Approach: Engage, Skill-Build and Create-Evaluate.

Our intent in English is to create a positive reading, writing, speaking and listening culture in school, so our pupils go from strength to strength, building on their skills, as they work through each journey of the writing process. Throughout this journey, we engage children in a range of genres, in order to write for an array of purposes, and audiences, to unlock limitless opportunities for what they can achieve.

We aim for all children at All Saints' Primary School to leave Year 6 with the ability to:

  • Embrace reading, demonstrating their love of reading and a desire to read for enjoyment
  • Write and read with confidence, fluency and understanding, using a range of independent strategies
  • Write in a variety of styles (text types) with intended impact using various writing skills/tools
  • Carefully select vocabulary with attention to the desired effect on the readers’ thoughts and feelings and articulate their responses in any discussion

We adapt learning in response to diverse learning needs and overcoming potential barriers making learning accessible for all no matter what the children’s starting point is, so they reach their potential and flourish. We want all of our children to be capable readers, writers, spellers and speakers, who can transfer their English skills to other curriculum areas and who are prepared for the next phases in their education. By giving children the context to learning, they will understand the value of English to them now and in their futures.
