Reading in Y2 to Y6

At All Saints’, we are passionate about nurturing a lifelong love of reading in every child. Our vision is for all children to become fluent, confident readers who read widely and unlock new worlds and opportunities in every area of the curriculum. Building on the foundation of our phonics programme, our Reading and Comprehension curriculum for Year 2 to Year 6 is designed to cultivate the skills, strategies, and enjoyment necessary for children to grow as capable, reflective and lifelong readers.

We believe that reading is the key to unlocking learning across all subjects, enriching children's imaginations, broadening their vocabulary, and fostering compassion and wisdom. Through a carefully structured programme of lessons, we help children develop the comprehension strategies they need to interpret and enjoy a diverse range of texts. Our approach ensures that every child, regardless of their starting point, feels confident when encountering new words and ideas in their reading.

Comprehension is simply the ability to understand what we read. By building a strong foundation in comprehension skills, we aim to empower our students to make sense of stories, facts, and ideas, both in and beyond the classroom.  By building these skills, we help our children express their own ideas more clearly. This is a priority we are fully committed to, so we invite you to explore the additional pages for what Reading and Comprehension looks like and its impact.
