2. What is the impact of History at All Saints'?

Driven by our All Saints' Approach, we provide a carefully planned, enquiry-based curriculum with opportunities to support children in becoming independent learners who don’t take evidence for granted - where they express their own opinions based on well-thought-out questions and answer those questions.

History at All Saints’ is a discrete and celebrated subject that strikes a balance between academic rigour and creativity. Substantive knowledge is continually remembered and reinforced, whilst taught alongside disciplinary knowledge that allows our children to secure their grasp of abstract terms such as ’civilisation’ and ‘migration’. Our engaging curriculum is carefully sequenced to build clear progression of acquisition of knowledge, skill-building, deepening learning, with the revisiting of disciplinary knowledge over time and in a range of contexts.

On visiting lessons, you will see children gain an enjoyment of history through engaging, memorable lessons grounded in historical fact and taught by enthusiastic teachers with strong subject knowledge. Our outcomes reflect the application of acquired skills that have been built over time, allowing children to confidently share their knowledge.  Debates, drama and immersion activities such as class banquets, problem-solving activities working alongside different year groups, where knowledge can be shared and compared, letter writing to local campaigners and MPs and class 'museums' to name just a few.  These activities allow for ongoing self, peer and teacher assessments and evaluations.

In order to demonstrate that we have accomplished our aims, pupils at All Saints Primary School will:

  • Be well-motivated learners who can recall substantive knowledge with understanding.
  • Provide written responses that are well-developed through the year groups.
  • Be able to gather evidence and interpret sources, asking and answering pertinent questions with an understanding of bias.
  • Be able to express their own opinions using both substantive and disciplinary knowledge, in a range of contexts.
  • Have a depth of understanding in local, British and world history and be able to apply their knowledge
  • Have an age-appropriate understanding of chronology.
